The biggest blockbuster move of the 2011 trading season (so far) involved two teams that are quickly falling out of the postseason picture in the Western Conference: The
St. Louis Blues and the
Colorado Avalanche. In the early morning hours on Saturday the deal was announced, with the
Blues sending former No. 1 overall draft pick
Erik Johnson, along with defensive forward
Jay McClement, to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward
Chris Stewart and defenseman
Kevin Shattenkirk. The trade also involves St. Louis receiving a conditional 2011 or 2012 second-round draft pick, while Colorado receives a conditional 2011 or 2012 first-round pick.
The condition,
according to TSN's Bob McKenzie, is that if St. Louis' first round pick in 2011 is in the top 10 it can "protect" that pick and the picks will then switch to the 2012 selections..
It's a surprising trade to say the least, and both general managers seem happy with the young players they swapped.
