Sami Salo Looks Toward the Future -- Wherever That May Be

VANCOUVER -- Sami Salo's quest for a new contract, either with the Vancouver Canucks or another NHL team, has begun.

The veteran Canucks defenseman reported to the Manitoba Moose of the AHL for their game Friday in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., against Pittsburgh's top farm club. Out since July with a torn Achilles tendon, Salo is expected to play two games as part of a conditioning stint that is expected to conclude Sunday in Hershey, Pa.

"I'm really excited, for sure," Salo, 36, told the Winnipeg Free Press. "I've been skating for the past month and a half and doing small, successful steps getting towards playing games."

Salo was injured while playing floorball, a form of floor hockey in his native Finland. He helped put the fledgling sport on the map. (Coincidentally, Canada's women's floorball team was in the Vancouver area for a two-game world championship qualifier Friday and Saturday. Until December, when a training camp was held, some Canadian players were not even aware that Canada had a team.)
