Randy Edsall Named New Maryland Football Coach

Randy EdsallRandy Edsall has been hired by Maryland as its new football coach, effective immediately.

The news was announced by the school in a press release Sunday afternoon. Edsall will be formally announced at a news conference Monday at 2:00 p.m. ET in the Glazer Auditorium on Maryland's campus. Maryland's athletic office -- headed up by athletic director Kevin Anderson -- will comment on the hiring during the news conference.

Edsall has been Connecticut's coach since 1998, overseeing a transition from Division I-AA to an independent to a member of the Big East. Everything came to fruition in 2010, as the Huskies made their first appearance in a BCS bowl, losing to Oklahoma Saturday night. Under Edsall, the Huskies won at least eight games in each of the past four seasons. He was the 2010 Big East coach of the year. Edsall is 74-70 in his career as a head coach.

Edsall replaces Ralph Friedgen, who was the 2010 ACC coach of the year and went out with a 51-20 win in the Military Bowl. Friedgen amassed a 75-50 record during his 10 seasons at Maryland, taking the Terrapins to seven bowls. The 2010 Terps were 9-4, after a 2-10 record in 2009.
