Akron Wins College Cup 2010, Claims First NCAA National Title

College Cup 2010SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The University of Akron men's soccer team secured its first NCAA championship on Sunday afternoon, downing the University of Louisville Cardinals 1-0 in Santa Barbara.

A 79th minute strike from sophomore midfielder Scott Caldwell was the difference as Akron raised the school's first Division I trophy in any sport.

Louisville entered Sunday's game unbeaten at 12-0-3, but were outmatched by Akron's talented roster. The Cardinals enjoyed a few spells of good possession, but were unable to crack a resolute Zips defense.

The first half of Sunday's game was a spirited affair, with each team looking to assert itself early on. Akron junior captain Michael Nanchoff led the charge for the Zips, sending all manner of dangerous ball into the Louisville area from the left flank. His efforts were nearly rewarded in the fifth minute when he crosses a high ball into the penalty spot that freshman forward Darren Mattocks just barely headed over the crossbar.
