Jere Lehtinen Retires After 14 Seasons

Jere Lehtinen, one of the best defensive forwards and most underrated players in the NHL in recent years, officially announced his retirement Wednesday after playing 14 seasons in the NHL, all of them coming with the Dallas Stars, the franchise that originally selected him in the fourth round of the 1992 draft (when the team was based in Minnesota). For his career he scored 243 goals to go with 271 assists, and he is currently the only player from Finland to win a Stanley Cup and a Gold Medal at the World Championships.

A capable and steady offensive weapon for the Stars during their run at the top of the NHL in the late 90's and early 2000's, Lehtinen's most valuable asset was his ability as a shutdown defensive forward, and he was recognized for that play by winning the Selke Trophy -- given to the NHL's best defensive forward -- three times, an accomplishment matched only by Bob Gainey, Pavel Datsyuk and Guy Carbonneau.
