TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Bobby Bowden couldn't overlook the irony either. In 12 months, the Sunshine State's Big Three - Florida, Florida State and Miami - have lost their coaches, either by invitation, termination or resignation. Include South Florida in the mix - the Bulls are one of the state's four automatic-qualifying Bowl Championship Series programs - and that makes it four-for-four over that time.
Urban Meyer resigned from Florida on Wednesday, stepping down for the second time in less than a year. Meyer's finale after six years and two national titles at UF will be against Penn State on Jan. 1 in the Outback Bowl.
Bowden was caught off guard by Meyer's decision, too.
"I was very surprised. I hated it for him and I hope it's not a health issue," Bowden told FanHouse Friday afternoon before his book signing here at Garnet & Gold in Governor's Square Mall.
