Colorado Rapids' 'Dirty Desire to Win' Leads to First MLS Title

mls cup colorado rapidsTORONTO -- The Colorado Rapids' dramatic run through the MLS Cup playoffs presents a convincing argument for the power of intangibles in sports.

No one could argue that they were the league's best team this year. The Rapids finished the regular season 12-8-10, good for fifth in the Western Conference and seventh overall. They won just one of their final four games heading into the playoffs, for which they hadn't qualified since 2007.

And yet, the whole was far greater than the sum of those numbers.

"For anyone out there who didn't back us, I pity you," coach Gary Smith said following his team's 2-1 defeat of FC Dallas in Sunday's MLS Cup Final. "If any money I had, if I knew that every time a side walked out on the pitch they were going to give absolutely everything they got, you ain't far away."
